When I count I automatically group the numbers in clusters of four \u2013 counting four steps and then another four in the staircase, four stitches in a pattern repeat, groups of four breaths in the cold bath. Also, usually four treadles at a time on the spinning wheel, as if I were spinning in common time. This yarn, though, wanted to be spun in triple time, a waltzing yarn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I spin in triple time, treadling each wooly part through dancing hands\nTrip-le-time, trip-le-time,\ntrailing wool, back and forth\nOne-two-three, four-five-six, gather twist,\nseven-eight-nine, make the draw, arm's length back,\nthirteen-fourteen-fifteen, yarn slides through\ngather twist four-five-six.<\/pre>\n\n\n\n
fibers live, open up the twist,\nfinding space in the yarn, yield to the twist,\nfour-five-six, make the draw,\nback and forth, leaning in to gather, back to draw the yarn, floating the twist, live in the fibers, between my hands, leaning forth again.<\/pre>\n\n\n\n

Icelandic wool separated, and the undercoat teased<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n
Once sweet locks of Icelandic wool\npulled apart,\novercoat left, sparkling of charge\nundercoat right, hair on end like the morning after\norderly piles, one for each\ntease by hand\narched fibers stretched, layer by layer\nWelcome air!\nto breathe, to puff, and gently let go.<\/pre>\n\n\n\n

Card, tease and roll, in triple time.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n
A handful of wool\noffered to the card\nsoftly-softly brush,\none-two-three\ntransfer wool\nfour-five-six,\nshape the roll\npromising loft\ncarding a waltz.\n<\/pre>\n\n\n\n
Trip-le-time, trip-le-time,\nswaying and dawning a promise of yarn\nseven-eight-nine, pulse of the twist eager to rush through\nHow can't I see it, that dazzle of fibers?\nready to catch the yarn,\nmake the yarn,\nstrengthen, soften\nto the tune of the waltz.\nTrip-le-time, trip-le-time\nswaying the waltz,\nsoftly.\nGently.\nFiber and yarn, that sweet spot between,\nfree to glide,\nfree to twist,\nstay in the space, conform to its shape\nOnce there, inviting the twist back in\nto seal, to protect the strength,\nto surrender to the yarn.<\/pre>\n\n\n\n

Four-five-six\nmake the draft,\nshooting the fibers into its power,\nstill somewhat fiber, still somewhat yarn,\nin limbo,\nsuspended between airy and dense,\nbetween soft and strong. \nHands in conversation through the yarn,\nthe bubbling\nof the fire\nin the point of twist engagement,\na point that is no point,\nbut a context of in-betweenness,\nneither rolag nor yarn,\nyet both, and still none,\nopen and close,\nuntil my hands feel the spot to settle in, allow the twist back,\nto seal, to confirm, to conform\nin a newborn yarn, \nto land quietly, gently on the bobbin,\nstrand next to strand,\nan arm's length from the rolag they were once part of,\nyet a lifetime away,\na new shape, a new purpose.<\/pre>\n\n\n\n
Reading my words\nmakes me see\nthat I write\nin clusters of three,\nto the beat\nand the sway\nof a\ntri-ple-time waltz.<\/pre>\n\n\n\n
