Last week I got the proof for my book. Listen to the Wool. This is the last step for me before the book goes to the printer\u2019s in August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Until now I\u2019ve got an email with the manuscript in a Word file every time I get it back from my editor. This time, though, I got it in a pdf, carefully designed. And it looks stunning. With colours, fonts, and photo placements they take the reader by the hand and lead them through the pages in an organic and gentle way. Seeing my words next to Dan\u2019s photos, in their new home, feels truly special.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the break <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

My task for the three weeks I have the script is to proof read it and create the index. I try to go through one chapter every day until my deadline. I\u2019m revisiting every word, for the first time since early April. A lovely encounter, no doubt, not much different from meeting an old friend after a time apart. The last thing I did before I sent the whole script to my editor back in September was to read the whole thing out loud<\/a>. It took me eleven hours. I was honestly quite tired of it by then. I had a break from the book until January, and then again until early April.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With new eyes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Now, as I read it again I do it with pride. These words are mine, carefully chosen from hundreds of thousands, and those hundreds of thousands chosen from so many more stories, encounters and experiences. I can look at a photo in the book of one of the sheep (chosen from a collection of fifty of the same flock, all equally lovely) and tell twenty stories from that photo alone. About how I know the sheep owner, how we got to the farm, about the visit to the pasture and the generosity with which the sheep farmer so generously shared her story with us. Louise in the archipelago<\/a>, Milis in the forest<\/a>, Lena in the shearing pen<\/a>. They were all such beautiful parts of the book, even if all you can see of them is a photo or two of their sheep. But the stories live on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I can\u2019t wait to feel the book in my hands, to browse through the pages of a real book, with my words, right there on the pages, with my name on the front cover. The publishing date is November 4th.
